{"id":2,"date":"2024-09-04T13:42:26","date_gmt":"2024-09-04T13:42:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/monemvasia.co\/?page_id=2"},"modified":"2024-09-04T14:47:52","modified_gmt":"2024-09-04T14:47:52","slug":"sample-page","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/monemvasia.co\/?page_id=2","title":{"rendered":"History of Monemvasia"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Early history<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While uninhabited in antiquity, the island upon which the town of Monemvasia is situated may have been the site of a <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Minoan_civilization\">Minoan<\/a> trading post. <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Pausanias_(geographer)\">Pausanias<\/a>, the renowned Greek traveler and geographer, referred to the site as <em>Akra Minoa<\/em>, which translates to &#8220;Minoan Promontory&#8221;.<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Monemvasia#cite_note-6\">[6]<\/a><\/sup> The ancient settlement of <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Epidaurus_Limera\">Epidaurus Limera<\/a> was located a little north of Monemvasia in ancient times. The region surrounding the two settlements has been inhabited since prehistoric times. During <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Roman_Empire\">Roman<\/a> times it flourished as the most important city on the eastern coast of the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Cape_Maleas\">Malea peninsula<\/a>.<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Monemvasia#cite_note-7\">[7]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Pausanias_(geographer)\">Pausanias<\/a> visited Epidaurus Limera and said that opposite the city there was a promontory which he referred to as the &#8220;extremity of Minos&#8221;, which has been identified as Monemvasia. <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Strabo\">Strabo<\/a>\u2014a century earlier\u2014mentions it as &#8220;Minoan fortress&#8221;. The toponym &#8220;Minoa&#8221; indicates the existence of a port in antiquity, traces of which have been discovered underwater. However, it is not known if there was a significant settlement on the island. It is possible that a settlement was established there in the 4th century, around the time when the capital of the Roman Empire moved from <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Rome\">Rome<\/a> to <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Constantinople\">Constantinople<\/a>, which resulted in changes in maritime trade routes.
